Arsenal Rumours: Wenger rules out winter move for Gourcuff

| December 13, 2011 | 0 Comments

Arsene Wenger has dismissed claims that he will be looking to bring in Lyon’s creative midfielder Yoann Gourcuff in the January transfer window, but has revealed his admiration for the French international.

With Ramsey, Arteta and Song commanding the Gunners midfield at present, and Wilshere and Diaby set to return from their respective injuries soon it seems natural that Wenger will not dip into the market this winter. However it is clear that Arsenal require more depth in the attacking department, and the French international could be the answer for a Fabregas/Nasri replacement.

The Frenchman said on his interest of Gourcuff:

He is a player I like a lot and I believe people have been very critical towards him in France.

However, we won’t be in the winter market for any midfield positions considering that our players are back from injuries.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas previously claimed that Arsenal approached his club with a bid to sign the midfielder in the summer, but the Gunners had their initial bid knocked back. Will Wenger renew his interest next summer? It seems unlikely if Wilshere, Ramsey, Arteta and Song are all fully fit, but I feel like Gourcuff or Gotze still need to be bought next summer to provide more competition for Ramsey in the creative midfielder role and provide more depth for the Gunners to compete on all fronts.
