Wenger: Wilshere WILL play at West Brom on Monday

| September 28, 2012 | 4 Comments

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Jack Wilshere will finally make his return to playing football for the under-21’s when they play West Brom on Monday.

As we all know, Wilshere has been sidelined with injury for over a year now with injury troubles in his foot followed by surgery to a persistent problem to his knee.

The young Englishman was a regular first-team footballer before succumbing to injury and no doubt everyone is hopeful that he makes a successful return to the first-team.

Wenger is quoted as saying by Arsenal.com on Wilshere’s comeback:

He will play on Monday, he will play his first game with the under-21s, maybe an hour or something like that.

It’s another important step but he has not played for 14 months so we have to calm your [the media’s] impatience a little bit.

It is fantastic for him. When you are at that age and are out for such a long time, it is absolutely massive to take [for] him and Frimpong.

Frimpong had two knee injuries, Jack had two setbacks. It is massive for them to come back and for us as well.

First of all, it is absolutely great to see another fan favourite finally make a return football. It has been likened to a new signing with Diaby making his return and I am hopeful that both Frimpong and Wilshere draw the same conclusions.

Although it is quite some way off, once Wilshere does return to the first-team it will mean there will be somewhat of a selection dilemma for Arsene Wenger considering the players at his disposal.

In saying this however, competition is a good part of any squad and this year it would be fair to say that competition within the Arsenal squad is definitely highest in midfield.

The amount of choice also gives Arsene the ability to employ some kind of rotation through the long and physically demanding season. An option never really available to Wenger in past seasons. I am sure Diaby and Arteta would welcome it with the former still considered somewhat injury prone and the latter now at the more mature age of 30.

The big question is however whether Wilshere is still as good as he was before he succumbed to injury. It looks probable with his team-mates saying he looks great in training. Can’t wait to see him back and playing in an Arsenal shirt!

What do you guys think? Should Wilshere take over the role of one of the current Arsenal first-teamers? Feel free to leave a comment below or discuss this topic in the allArsenal.com forums in the Wilshere thread.
