Morgan Schneiderlin turns down Arsenal move

| July 29, 2014 | 10 Comments

SchneiderlinArsenal target Morgan Schneiderlin has reportedly turned down a chance to sign for the Gunners, according to reports in the Metro.

The 24 year old has been strongly linked with a move to the North London club this summer, as Wenger looks to bring in a defensive midfielder. The manager has reportedly made the Frenchman his number one target after failing to agree a deal for Sami Khedira.

However, the report states that Morgan Schneiderlin has snubbed interest from Arsenal and now looks set to seal a move to their London rivals Tottenham Hotspur instead.

The Gunners made an approach to Southampton over the weekend to sign the France international, but despite their interest and the lure of Champions League football, the midfielder has made it clear he wants to join Spurs.

It seems the lure of working with ex-Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino was too difficult to refuse and the player’s agent is expected to begin negotiations with Tottenham today.

The chief correspondent of, Wayne Veysey has also confirmed the news, saying the midfielder turned down Arsenal as he wanted guaranteed first team football.

If Schneiderlin had joined Arsenal he would be competing with a host of stars for a starting place. Ramsey is guaranteed a starting spot when fit, leaving Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini, Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby to fight it out for the deep lying role.

There is no doubt that he is a great player, but if he doesn’t have the confidence in his own ability to earn a first team spot rather than being ‘guaranteed’ one, then it would be better to look somewhere else. The £27 million fee demanded by Southampton for him was bit too high and there was no chance Arsenal would have paid that kind of price.

Instead of spending that much on Schneiderlin, it would better to invest on Lars Bender as he is more experienced than the Saints midfielder and he has been involved in the Champion League over the last few seasons. While he is a full German international that only just missed out on the World Cup because of injury.

William Carvalho has also been heavily linked with a move in the past week or so and there are still rumours suggesting we’ll have another go for Khedira. However with Calum Chambers able to play in midfield do we even need another defensive midfielder with Arteta, Flamini and Diaby in the mix? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Schniderlein what a toss pot going to spurs he wont get a regular first team run there what an idiot

When you look at it, at arsenal he’s competing with an ageing Arteta, an injury prone Flamini and diaby, and a poorly defensive Wilshere. He would have started anyway.

At spurs he’ll be competing with two very good defensive midfielders in paulinho and sandro, as well as Capoue. He’s not going to start most games

Think the real reason he turned us down is because his wife has weightwatchers on weds nite an he has to pick her up therefore playing weds nite is out but he can play thursdays which makes playing for spuds perfect

I hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Bale. Who knows what he might turn out to be 2 years from now.

this is the year for can keep your pogbas, khediras, and any other midfielder you can name.if diaby stays fit, which i think he will this year,i would take diaby over any of them.a real class act!!!

Wish I had your confidence pal, I will need to see diaby injury free and playing for 4 months, before I believe he can come good again. But also people should not rule out coquelin and zelalem, wenger has been impressed by both in training. Add those to the other 5 plus cazorla rosicky and ozil and you suddenly have 10 players competing for 3 spots just like we have 10 forwards competing for 3 spots. Add that to 9 defenders and 3 keepers then all of a sudden we have a 32 man squad and still with room for 1 more.

And d diaby dream continues :-P
