Alexandre Dimitri Song Billong, more easily known as Alex Song, left the Gunners last summer for a ‘new challenge’ – to break into arguably the best midfield in modern football.
Quite a challenge it has been so far for the Cameroonian combative midfield, managing only 10 appearances since his move and averaging one appearance a month since the turn of the year.
Similarly to when ex Gunner talisman Cesc Fabregas was finding life hard in Barcelona, reports are suggesting Arsene Wenger will be looking to buy Song back this summer to plug the gaping hole left wide open by the defensive midfielder.
He was sold for £15m so a fee close to that will likely persuade the Catalan giants to sell, especially as they are eager to reinforce their backline during the upcoming transfer window and have an abundance of midfield talent in their ranks.
Many Gooners found the sale of the Cameroon international a blow, while others perceived the deal as a blessing. For the latter it is hard to argue that he was Arsenal’s second best player last season and was a real driving force at the heart of our midfield.
He would be able to slot straight back into the squad and alleviate the pressure on Arteta to play defensively. Song would be a safe buy rather than risking potentially more money on an overseas player.
What are your thoughts? Do you think Wenger should bring back Song or look elsewhere?
