Arsenal miss out on Holtby to Spurs

Arsenal have missed out on one of their top transfer targets Lewis Hotlby, a player who Wenger admitted he was interested in, as rivals Spurs have organized a pre-contract agreement meaning he will join in the summer for free.

The news will come as big blow for Gooners as Arsenal have missed out on three, plausible transfer targets already in Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar, Fernando Llorente and now Lewis Holtby whose contract expires with Schalke this summer.

The German international will head to White Hart Lane at the end of the season, and they have every reason to be delighted after such a massive coup for the club.

A Spurs statement read:

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Germany Under-21 captain Lewis Holtby to join the club in July from Bundesliga side Schalke, subject to a medical.

Missing out on the German starlet is a big let down, he is highly talented and has a massive future ahead of him, but like Jan Vertonghen he will be playing for the wrong club in North London.

Wenger and his negotiation team should have moved faster or tried harder to acquire the 22-year-old who has been a vital cog in the successful Schalke side. But yet again another reported top target heads elsewhere, this January may not be as productive as many hoped.

Lets get something correct here. Just like Vertonghen, Holtby wanted to join THFC and not Arsenal.

Articles like this really p!ss me off; negativity when you haven’t got a clue what is going on behind the scenes. For example, Arsenal had never any chance of signing Klaas Jan Huntelaar; he was born in and lives in the Achterhoek, an area in Holland close to Gelsenkirchen an hour by car. he wanted to stay at Schalke so he could stay at home in de Achterhoek. what you read in the press is just posturing by him and his agent to get a better deal. Of course gullible bloggers and hacks who need to sell newspapers get whipped up in a frenzy.
But yes, go on, claim you know all about transfers and how bad Arsenal, or any club of your choice, is at striking deals. Ignorance is bliss, keep flipping those burgers.

what drugs you on mate? vertonghen will be 3rd/4th choice at arsenal? he will be in 1st choice all day long (look at your defence and you can see how). He is an amazing CB and can play LB (better then gibbs for sure) and you 100% right spurs are a club on the up and that’s why lots of good players want to play for spurs. Arsenal fans are living on a different planet if they think that they can do without BA, llorente, huntelaar and Holtby and the best business you have done or will do this January is by letting Chumakh go and whoever said arsenal will not play CL football next year is spot on. Play in the Europa league for few years and then maybe your board will spend some money. A “big club” like arsenal are playing for 4th spot every year and only care about money and profit, you deserve everything you get…you are pathetic LITTLE club

RealG you really are in denial. Your post was a real eye opener as to how ridiculous arsenal fans will stoop to defend their club unable to bring in new players of any real quality (Cazorla being the one and only exception in the last god knows how many years) or being able to hang on to any half decent players you had!! 1 or 2 signings and you will have a great squad??? Don’t make me laugh. I’m sure Bradford would have something to say about that. Oh how we laughed haha.

The truth is these players want to play for a club that is on the up, not one going in the opposite direction. Look at the two squads and it will tell you all you need to know, i truely believe Arsenal will miss out on Champions League this year.

major talent! hey,but how many do we have in his position n how many are coming throu? many.he is not a priority for arsenal right now,we urgently need to strengthen positions like DM,LB n real left footed winger to have a complete team with depth.so,we can’t get them all thou he is real talent.

The painful thing is that … you get feeling that spurs sign these players with the intention of making bale think about staying

Arsenal sign there players knowing full well they are selling their best! And to cap it off, they keep it all in the dark… they make the fans think our squad will be awesome and they make the new players believe they will be playing with the one or two remaining big name players we have left.

    @catcher
Arsenal won’t miss out on CL football at the end of the season, not because the team is fantastic, merely that people seriously overestimate the quality of other teams.

Wenger has lost the plot and it is impossible to see how Arsenal will compete for the PL again whilst the club is so seriously mismanaged – top 4 team, at best maybe 3rd.

One thing I will defend Wenger over is that I think people are being silly in saying he is too slow – he is experienced enough for that to be extremely unlikely. Now if we are talking about him and the club being tight-fisted and making pathetic offers……………

Mystic, I gave you a like because I partly agree whilst also liking the stead fast belief that we will once agin get a top four spot.

But honestly… the other side of the coin fella… people must then seriously over estimate the worth of arsenal.

I mean, we are woeful! This is the first time (and we have been getting worse and worse every season) that we are just utterly outplayed in virtually every department. Everton, spurs and chelsea are playing much better than we are. We are only slightly better then the likes of liverpool! And we got some nice ref decisions a few games back.

This is the first time I can actually see us failing to get top four. You push your luck a little to far the castle will come crumbling down. Wenger sells his best players every year… that was only going to end one way… it is simply implausible that that strategy could work in the face of our rivals strengthening.

As it stands this season Spurs are playing better and will test above Arsenal if we dont start creating and scoring chances.

Spurs have been very unlucky the past few seasons and should have finished above us on some occassions.

The real problem is players wnat to join Spuds instead of the Gunners that should never happen this lad was a free agent had bags of ability and desire he shown that aganist us.

He shouldbe signing for us no question we have missed out big time with this signing and Wenger does not seem to have the ability to act quick and get deals over the line everything is to cautious and pondering

Arsenal got cazorla and wilshere in attacking midfield we simply dont need that boy. as far as cover for those two we got rociscky, what we we need is a combative midfield. besides Arsene was asked about him and wasnt intrested. as far as vertonghen all our defenders are better than him. enough said

Why r people complaining? When we sign a dm it will be either cazorla or wilshire fighting 4 da creative spot. Where will this low life, unambitious holtby playing? Holtby will be playing europa cause i believe we will finish above the spuds. So we need m’vila, david villa, a good goal keeper, some that gibbs will learn to defend from.

No, this is an Arsenal blog but due to the fact that the Spuds fans don’t have anyone to go out with at Friday nights, it’s no wonder they had free time to comment on an Arsenal blog. After all, if it wasn’t for those 5-2 thrashings, they would have no sexual experiences in 2012 to talk about.

Back to the topic: it is unpleasant to see that Arsenal target, the one named by Arsene Wenger as Arsenal target, ends up joining the Spuds. We do have better midfielders than Holtby – Wilshere, Cazorla, Arteta and Rosicky are all better than the German. The problem is, with our injury-prone-character, every quality player that we can acquire is useful, especially when his price tag is 0 pounds (unless it is Chamakh the player we are talking about). If we miss that opportunity, it is a blow. When our most bitter rivals sign him, it is a huge blow.

Arsenal-lost-again, never mind! all your palls are beginning to prefer Spurs to Arsenal, so you may as well join them. You won’t want to be an Arsenal supporter soon anyway, it’ll be so depressing, that many more staff will be needed by the samaritans to cope with all the sad Arsenal fans.
