Arsenal Rumours: Afellay offered to Gunners & Inter

| July 14, 2012 | 20 Comments

According to a report, Barcelona forward Ibrahim Afellay has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp despite solid Euro 2012 performances with Holland.

Arsenal missed out on signing the 26-year-old last year after he left PSV cheaply in the January window, and now apparently he could be available at a very cheap £4.75 million with the Catalan side keen to offload him. But Italian giants Inter Milan are also keen on the talented wingers signature and will be ready to battle Wenger to lure the forward to the San Siro.

Afellay only managed 28 appearances since his switch to Spain after suffering a serious knee injury that kept him out for most of last season. And now the Dutchman also finds himself further down the pecking order with the emergence of Isaac Cuenca and Cristian Tello in the first team, not to mention the first team regulars.

The versatile forward had earlier stated this summer he was keen to fight for a place at the Nou Camp, but now it seems more and more likely that he is not within the new manager Tito Vilanova’s plans.

If Arsenal managed to beat Inter to the punch, Affelay would be a big signing for the Gunners. Especially with the uncertainty over Walcott’s future at the Emirates, the Holland international would provide a more than capable replacement. He is approaching the peak footballing age, has plenty of experience and is a real athlete as well is a talented footballer.

What do you guys think? Do you think Wenger should go after Affelay if he is indeed surplus to Barca’s plans? Feel free to comment below or in allArsenal’s forum under Affelay’s thread

  6. Cornelius says:

This could be the move Rvp was waiting for. If Arsenal bring his best friend over..he might just stay to sign long term. However this means too many forwards for Arsenal= almost clocking double digits.
What we need is a creative midfielder and a defensive one. If Squillach and Djoruo leave then we need a solid defender too.

If walcott goes he would be a great replacement, he’s right up Arsen’s street, an absolute bargain at the price and super talented!
The onlt downside is we have to sell to buy and there are no takers
for the deadwood at the moment. By the time we get the money he might be gone!

  15. Yeafer says:

He is certainly a good option. But I don’t know why you all would think he can be a Theo replacement. He plays on the left wing…a position where we have recently galvanized with the acquisition of Podolski backed up by Gervinho, Ox, Arshavin and must not we forget Ryo. (taking into consideration that we are still on course to take all these players to pre-season) Afellay would be a bargain for sure but do we really need him? Could we maybe add these extra few million pounds and invest in much required defensive players?
