According to a goal.com report, Barcelona forward Ibrahim Afellay has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp despite solid Euro 2012 performances with Holland.
Arsenal missed out on signing the 26-year-old last year after he left PSV cheaply in the January window, and now apparently he could be available at a very cheap £4.75 million with the Catalan side keen to offload him. But Italian giants Inter Milan are also keen on the talented wingers signature and will be ready to battle Wenger to lure the forward to the San Siro.
Afellay only managed 28 appearances since his switch to Spain after suffering a serious knee injury that kept him out for most of last season. And now the Dutchman also finds himself further down the pecking order with the emergence of Isaac Cuenca and Cristian Tello in the first team, not to mention the first team regulars.
The versatile forward had earlier stated this summer he was keen to fight for a place at the Nou Camp, but now it seems more and more likely that he is not within the new manager Tito Vilanova’s plans.
If Arsenal managed to beat Inter to the punch, Affelay would be a big signing for the Gunners. Especially with the uncertainty over Walcott’s future at the Emirates, the Holland international would provide a more than capable replacement. He is approaching the peak footballing age, has plenty of experience and is a real athlete as well is a talented footballer.
What do you guys think? Do you think Wenger should go after Affelay if he is indeed surplus to Barca’s plans? Feel free to comment below or in allArsenal’s forum under Affelay’s thread
