Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has revealed that a loan move for David Villa can be ‘absolutely discarded’ as they are aim to keep the striker for the remainder of the season.
Although there has been no concrete evidence, rumours have been intensifying that Arsene Wenger is chasing Villa. The link makes sense in some ways, the Spaniard has dropped heavily down the pecking order after suffering a leg break last season and at 31 wants to play regularly in his final years of his career.
However Rosell has squashed any rumours suggesting that Spain’s all time record goalscorer will remain at the Catalan giants this season. He told Catalan paper Sport at Monday night’s FIFA Ballon d’Or gala:
A loan for David Villa in the winter transfer window can be absolutely discarded. He is our player and we need him.
So there goes another transfer target, with available striking options starting to run thin now. It seemed a very long shot that Arsenal would be able to acquire the Spaniard, however speculation in the media was starting to gather pace over the past week.
Wenger is running out of options to reinforce the attacking lineup which desperately requires depth, missing out on Demba Ba for a mere £7m is a joke as he is a proven Premier League goalscorer and may end up doing great things for our rivals Chelsea.
There may be good news on the horizon though with reports suggesting Theo Walcott is close to signing a new deal with the club.
