Wenger hints at last minute Cavani move, 99% certain Walcott will sign

Arsene Wenger has already admitted that the club can now ‘spend big’ on transfers, and now the Frenchman has lined up his first massive acquisition in Edinson Cavani while he is ’99% optimistic’ that Theo Walcott will sign a new deal this weekend.

Cavani, 25, is one of Europe’s most desirable forwards at present and the Napoli striker has attracted plenty of interest from England, namely from Manchester City who reportedly had a £45m bid rejected earlier this month.

The Uruguay international has netted 16 Serie A goals this season and is at the top of many Gooner’s wish lists, but despite seeming far too overpriced for moderate-spenders Arsenal, Wenger failed to rule out a move for the prolific forward – a position that desperately needs reinforcing at the Emirates.

The Frenchman revealed his interested in Cavani at his press conference on Thursday:

I like him as a player.

Will he cost a lot of money? That’s for sure. Nobody would deny that.

Our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player.

 

However with a mammoth £50million buy-out clause it seems Wenger would triple Arsenal’s transfer record on one player, but the Frenchman has admitted prices often decrease in the latter stages of the transfer window, further fueling rumours that he will in fact make a big move in the market this month. He continued:

 

The prices go always up at the start of the transfer market and go down in the last week. Sometimes as well they go up in the last week, but it depends.

Most of the time they go down in the last week and you know as well that 90 per cent of transfer activity happens in the last week if not in the last
48 hours.

 

Cavani himself has already admitted he would relish the opportunity to play in England, which seems like his next destination however Naples are reluctant to sell their star striker. The Uruguayan said:

 

I know that there has been interest from Premier League teams. I know I would be a success in the Premier League – and it is an exciting prospect.

 

Acquiring the 25-year-old would be a massive statement and prove to the fans that the Gunners can compete with the Premier League elite, however with Napoli holding out for the buy-out clause at least, it seems highly unlikely that Arsenal will buy Cavani. But you cannot deny Wenger’s attitude has changed somewhat recently with the news that the Emirates is now paid off and he can start to flex some muscle in the transfer market, so maybe a big deal could be on the horizon to really bolster the squad.

There is more positive news for Gooners as Theo Walcott is closing in on a new deal, and despite earlier ‘scares’, Wenger is convinced a contract will be signed by this weekend. The England international’s current terms expires this summer, and there was a huge risk that he may in fact leave for free at the end of this season, however the signs have looked very positive over the past month and it seems he will remain at the Emirates for the foreseeable future.

Wenger expressed his earlier concerns and his current optimism:

I was scared at some stage, yes, that he could leave because it is like that with the experience I have in negotiations.

When things last too long, it is never a good sign. In that case, it took us some time to get where we want to get.

It is still not finalised, but hopefully it will be done by this weekend. There is a possibility.

My optimism is at 99 per cent now.

 

The forward’s contractual negotiations have dragged on for some time now, and the positivity expressed by Wenger will help to settle nerves over the England stars future. Arsenal have had to endure some dreadful transfer saga’s over the past few seasons, but finally one will end in the Gunner’s favour, and let it be the first of many!
