Fulham vs Arsenal: Predicted Lineup

| August 23, 2013 | 17 Comments

The Gunners face a Fulham side who come off the back of a 1-0 victory over Sunderland, will be well rested and ready for their first home game of the new season.

Arsenal suffered a shock 3-1 loss at home on their opening day fixture against Aston Villa before travelling to Turkey in midweek and returning 3-0 victors over Fenerbahce.

Largely the north London side’s squad is fine, as revealed by Wenger, but they will be missing one key player – Laurent Koscielny who not only sustained a nasty gash to above the eye on Wednesday night, but he sits out this weekend after receiving two harsh yellows against Villa.

The backline will now reshuffle with Per Mertesacker the only fit, recognized centre half in the senior squad while Bacary Sagna’s versatility will once again become an invaluable asset to this Arsenal side and shift centrally. Carl Jenkinson will then slot in on the right with Kieran Gibbs, who netted against Fenerbahce and is a fit little bugger, expected to start again on the left despite the return of Nacho Monreal who lacks match practice.

In midfield there will be some question marks. Jack Wilshere has now started three matches in the space of a week and after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines the last thing Wenger needs is an injury to his star midfielder. But the Frenchman may have no choice. Aaron Ramsey, man of the match in midweek, will no doubt continue in the engine room with either Santi Cazorla or Tomas Rosicky ahead of the two box-to-box midfielders.

Rosicky, like Wilshere has played a number of games recently, he his getting on in his years and injury-prone. He may be afforded a rest with Cazorla back into the swing of things in the Champions League. This should allow Podolski to finally make his first start of the season.

Wenger has chosen to ignore the experienced German until the latter stages of both the games this campaign despite such a solid pre-season. Hopefully Poldi will get a start with tired legs a likely problem for the midfield already.

One thing to consider once again is the home leg against Fenerbahce on Tuesday night at Emirates, however with a 3-0 lead Wenger can look to rotate a little especially if the game starts off well. But at the same time we cannot afford to become complacent for such a vital game.

Walcott and Giroud are once again automatic selections on the wing and up front respectively. Unfortunately there is little depth in this squad, especially with injuries to Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arteta and Vermaelen. The latter is on course for a return soon.

Probable lineup:

Szczesny

Jenkinson Sagna Mertesacker (c) Gibbs

Wilshere Ramsey

Rosicky

Walcott Cazorla

Giroud

My Preferred lineup:

Szczesny

Jenkinson Sagna Mertesacker (c) Gibbs

Wilshere Ramsey

Cazorla

Walcott Podolski

Giroud

What are your thoughts Gooners?? I’d quite like to see Podolski start and Rosicky rested. It may not be the time to rotate, but Cazorla can play centrally to allow the Czech international a break. Or even starting with the predicted lineup and switching to the preferred lineup later on.

Podolski deserves a start and is more than capable of doing a job. He should’ve come on instead of the tired Cazorla last weekend who ended up making crucial mistakes, and the German international has a hell of a strike on him.

I have always said this “Carzola plays much better in the cente of the park than on the wing. Poldi is the man for the wing”.
I would also like to see Poldi getting more game time before he gets fed up with warming the bench.
I would go with the second prediction.

In wenger we trust; because at Arsenal Rest is overrated, rotation is not necessary! We play with an edge, no bench. Play the first eleven (who can walk) every game ever week.

I agree totally with your selection. Carrzola is best in the centre servicing the striker and the wingmen. Also if he gets the chance to shoot he generally is on target at the goal. Risicky far too often shoots far and wide,

    My prefered line up:

Sczesny—Jenkinson Sagna Mertasacker Gibbs—Ramsey Rosicky Cazorla—Poldoski Giroud Walcott

Bench: Fabianski Monreal Yennaris Wilshere Akpom Yanogo Frimpong

Arsenal transfer works: I think its financially possible 2 bring in Cesar 2M or loan(or Casillas 10M), Toby Aldeirwerld(7M), Di Maria(15M), Flamini(free), Kondogbia(17M), Benzema(40M, only if Real buy another striker and/or get Bale)…This brings to a final sum of 81M(or 51M) and I think all gooners around the world will be happy. The board will also be happy all d budget was nWenger would have a good squad to win a minimum of 1 trophy.

Based on personnel I think Walcott needs to come of the bench, to provide that change of pace starting after the 60 min mark. The offense needs to run through Carzola and Rosisky these two until Arteta gets back are the lads with the soccer acumen to take this team to the next level. So

    Scezney
    Jenkinson Sagna Mertasacker Gibbs
    Flamini Ramsey
    Rosisky Carzola Podolski
    Giroud.

Walcott comes on depending on how the game is going and the lads are performing for either Giroud or Podolski. Wilshere for Ramsey or Rosisky.

The hope is before the spurs game you have a real dm on board, I think we should overpay for Kondiagba. To be frank years of neglect in player personnel has left is solidly behind the top clubs. And my assertion is you will need a 3 to 4 year strategy to get back to world class football, we lack the personnel, Walcott Ramsey, Wilshere are just not there yet, we need to accept this, and get them mentors over the nxt season or two if they are to carry this team in the years to come. Short of that we will eventually fall out of CL, it is but a matter of time.
