Starting with the youngsters, Arsene has revealed that a number of Arsenal’s up and coming stars could start or at least feature in the match. Speaking of the most likely starters, it has been confirmed that Reserves captain Ignasi Miquel will start the match. Nico Yennaris, Thomas Eisfeld and Serge Gnabry seem to be the other likely contenders, particularly the latter with Wenger revealing he could play for the first-team this year.
Looking now at Arsenal’s regular first-team squad players and it seems only Mannone is the only certainty to retain a starting spot from last weekends match, with Ramsey the other possibility. The match will give the remaining Arsenal fringe players the chance to impress with Arshavin, Djourou, Santos and Coquelin the all likely to get a starting spot.
One particular area of interest in this tie is the lone striker position. With contract-rebel Walcott wanting to make the transition up front and new signing Olivier Giroud yet to get off the mark in terms of scoring, it will be interesting to see who Wenger will pick to spearhead the attack. Personally speaking I would like Giroud to get a chance to open his goal-scoring account and get his confidence up.
One last notable mention is Emmanuel Frimpong who is expected to make the bench after successfully returning to training after a lengthy injury lay-off. The Ghanaian suffered a serious knee injury while on loan at Wolves, but according to Wenger is now as fit as ever as he attempts to make a successful return to first-team football. DENCH!
on the team that will be picked…
We will be focused to do well in this competition and we have an opportunity to do so against Coventry.
Because we have a big squad we will of course put out a strong team. When you think that Wilshere will still not be involved, Rosicky will not be involved, Sagna will not be involved, you can see that the squad is quite big and strong in quality.
on youngsters that may feature…
Hector Bellerin, Kris Olsson, Serge Gnabry, Nico Yennaris and Craig Eastmond could be [involved]. All these players could have an opportunity to play. Ignasi Miquel will play. We will have a good mixture of experience and professional top-class players.
We want to put out a talented side that has a good chance to win the game. We will give a chance to some players who have not played as many games recently. The players that did not play on Sunday [at Manchester City] will get a chance and it’s a good opportunity for them to show they can do well.
on Emmanuel Frimpong…
The good news is that Frimpong will be on the bench, and if possible, we will put him on.
It’s a big moment because he has suffered for a long time and has worked extremely hard, like Jack [Wilshere].
on Andrey Arshavin…
I have personally a great respect for Andrey Arshavin because sometimes some wrong ideas are circulated about him – that he doesn’t care, but it’s completely the opposite. He’s a 200 per cent professional who works very hard in training every day.
At the moment he’s a victim of the high level of competition that exists for places. He has a huge respect from everybody in the dressing room, and especially from the staff.
I feel he’s unhappy that he doesn’t play because deeply he loves football and he practices every day with 100 per cent commitment. I’m happy to give him some competition on Wednesday night.
