Arsenal’s new signing Olivier Giroud still remains optimistic that he will break his goalscoring duck soon after failing to net in his fourth start for the club.
The centre forward has had a poor showing in front of goal and to make it worse Arsenal’s other new signing Podolski contributing his third goal for the club in yesterday’s 2-1 victory against the Frenchman’s former club.
Last season he bagged the Ligue 1 golden boot, and while he has looked promising up top since his arrival he wants to add to the classy assist against Montpellier once he is fully match-fit and gain his rhythm.
He told goal.com:
Look I didn’t get the goal which would have helped me and definitely kick-started my season, but I was decisive by providing an assist for Lukas Podolski,” he told reporters after Tuesday night’s win in the south of France.
I’m still lacking a bit of rhythm, so it’s hard to play 90 minutes. But I will be better, I have to keep playing big games.
We have a good team and the competition between the players is healthy.
We play a lot of games so I’m not worried. I will keep training hard but I remain confident.
It’s a real pleasure as we are winning – it’s really nice.
I tried to stay really focussed before the game. I didn’t wander about, I wanted to keep my mind on the pitch and I did that pretty well.
Tonight we got the win and I was really happy the supporters here were behind me.
Giroud netted an impressive 33 goals in 72 games for Montpellier during his two seasons with the Ligue 1 outfit and he was an integral member of the side that took the Ligue gong last season.
While the media have over hyped his lack of goals in the absence of He Who Must Not Be Named, Gooners can be rest assured that we have a quality striker in Giroud that will battle the likes of Podolski, Gervinho and Walcott for the centre forward role.
His physicality is welcomed, and his height is useful both in attack when he is able to control the long ball and lay it off to the midfield, and in defence on set pieces. He is hard working and doing his job well – bar the goals of course. The important thing is for the Gunners to win, and if they continue to do so and Giroud fails to break his goalscoring duck for awhile but bags assists who can complain?
What are your thoughts on the Frenchman? Are you happy with his contribution so far? He did not any decent chances against Montpellier to score, but he still provided that all important final pass for Podolski. Feel free to comment below or in allArsenal’s forum in Giroud’s thread.
