Redknapp concedes third place to the Gunners after Norwich loss

| April 10, 2012 | 11 Comments

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has admitted it will be tough for his team to beat Arsenal to a top three finish this season, with the Englishman choosing to focus on a top four finish with Champions League qualification essential for his North London side.

Tottenham slumped to a home defeat against Norwich today, and the results got better for the Gunners after Chelsea drew 1-1 with Fulham meaning they remain in sixth position two points behind Newcastle (who beat Bolton 2-0) and Spurs.

Arsenal still have a game in hand that they play this Wednesday away to Wolves which could potentially open up a nice 5 point gap between fourth place if they can claim all three points, and Redknapp feels it will be difficult for Spurs to reclaim third place this season, he told the Mirror:

We have not been in bad form the last few weeks, but today was a setback. We had a bad day.

We were a bit flat. I thought their front two, especially Grant Holt, bullied us a bit.

It is all still to play for though.

It is going to be close, but there are still five games to go. It is the team who wants it most.

We would settle for finishing fourth, Champions League football is the key.

It would be lovely to finish above Arsenal, but that is going to be tough now.

It is still all to play for – Chelsea have to play Arsenal, Newcastle have to play Chelsea, Chelsea have to play Liverpool away, so who knows?

The results recently have been going in Arsenal’s favour which is fantastic, and after Sunday’s emphatic victory over City it looks like the Gunners have what it takes to maintain their third spot. It is a vital position as it means automatic qualification into the Champions League rather than entering a qualification round prior to the start of the Premier League season.

But Wenger’s men have some tough, battling fixtures against the likes of Wolves and Chelsea coming up in the next couple of weeks, so they must give everything to prevent a slipup. Arsenal’s fate is in their own hands now with their rivals dropping point left, right and centre so it is extremely vital that they gain at least six or seven points in their next three games but preferably nine.

We should beat wolves, they haven’t been on good form recently. And we should win by a good margin, to improve goal difference.

And we definatley cannot lose to chelsea. Draw at minimum with them, but we should beat them also.

Getting 3rd spot can keep star players and lure newer ones to the club, as UCL is confirmed.

Lets pray wenger doesn’t start ramsey in any of our remaining games cos if he does, we have lost already.

stop with this stupid ramsey bashing and focus on getting behind the team! Aaron’s had a pretty bad spell but apart from missing an open goal I thought he looked solid when he came on against Shitty.
In current form I think it’s better to use him as a power sub though.

Wolves will be a dificult game and I’d like to keep some stability in the team and start with the same players that started last game. In the back we will probably have to make two changes with Djorou and Santos coming on for Kos and Gibbs. Midfield should stay yhe same and up front I’d like to rest Theo and play Ox or Gervinho on the right.

Can’t you see every time we play Ramsey we struggle offensively especially when he is out wide, wenger is forcing Ramsey to play and in my opinion he is not there yet the manager is going to destroy the lad just like what he did to Denilson not using them properly.

Ramsey haters just piss off and say nothing. how can any talk like thathelp the kid dont u think he has been through enough what with the horrific leg break and death of hos international manager. that by the way was when his form dropped off i am told that hit him really hard as he really looked up to speed after he showed so much faith in making him captain of wales. lets also not forget how young ramsey is. younger than gibbs walcott szcesney and even hoyte. He still does not even command a place in our 25 man squad till august 31st. Wenger has played him out of position all season he is not an attacking midfielder and he is definitely not a winger. if anyone is to blame for ramseys loss of form it his 2 managers one for failing to buy a suitable replacement for fabregas instead thinking he can use a box to box young midfielder in the role and 2 gary speed. ok u cannot blame speed directly but when this sort of thing happens a 21 year old may just find it difficult to understand. Rambo will come good again used correctly in tandem with arteta wilshire song coquelin frimpong/mvila those 6 or 7 fighting fit for just 2 positions leaving rosicky diaby lansbury eisfeld and any new signing fighting it out for the attacking midfield role just behind the striker. when u look at that lot it makes u wonder if wenger will actually buy anyone as surely the ox too could play the AM role.
