The 6 ft 5 in stopper was virtually spectator particularly in the first half as he watched some wonderful football which culminated in goals for Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud.
The 23-year-old admitted that he was impressed with the standard of football on show but claimed that he was left watching the game like a fan to the extent that he started to get bored at the inactivity at his end.
Speaking to the Arsenal official website, he said:
I think for the first half an hour. I don’t remember playing like that for a long time, not just this season. I was like one of the fans behind the goal, just watching the game, and I couldn’t believe what was going on. We must have a couple of decent players or something! It was very enjoyable to watch.
I think we had a very strong start, I was getting very bored in goal to be honest for the first half an hour! We were fantastic I thought, we got an early lead and then it was just a matter of defending well and making sure that we did our job correctly, and we did that.
We’ll be confident, we’ll take on anyone right now. I think you could see that in the first half. They will be very tough games and probably very tight but we’re confident that we can get the six points and be safely in the last 16.
The Polish international believes Ozil’s eighth minute goal was the catalyst for the performance and also reserved special praise for the German. He added:
Obviously it was good to see him scoring. We all know about his assists over the last few years and he got one today as well, but it’s important for him to get confident, to score some goals.
We’ve seen him in training and he can do that, he’s a good finisher. We can expect a little bit more of that from him.
Arsenal were scintillating in last night’s 2-0 victory over Italian side Napoli in the Champions’ League group stage, the performance showed just how much confidence the current side posses. The Gunners won the game in the first 15 minutes, so most of the game was all about keeping their concentration and defending the lead they established early in the game.
It was certainly one of the best 45 minutes of football I can remember in recent memory and it’s no surprise that Ozil was the fulcrum of all the action. The current team posses the qualities which we have missed in the past few seasons i.e., they are calm and composed when we have the lead which is the reason we are winning close contests. If we continue to play like this then I don’t think the end of our trophy drought is far.
